A 70 strong field gathered for the qualifying stage of the County Championship, inclement weather was forecast, sadly the forecast became reality, seeing the qualifying reduced to 18 holes.
Andrew Minnikin shot a 3 under par 69 to lead the qualifying, and win the Renwick Medal. A play off was required to determine the last 3 qualifiers. There were 9 players for 3 places, with Sean Heads, Peter Sym and James Conn making it through, James getting there on the 8th play off hole.
Wednesday and Thursday saw some tight encounters, leaving Andrew Minnikin to play Angus Buchanan and Russell Hayhoe up against Cameron Thoburn in the semi finals.
Experience prevailed on both matches, setting up a fnal between Andrew and Russell.
A bright and windy morning greeted the players and spectators, the strong winds making putting tricky. At lunch after the first 18 holes, honours were even and the match all square.
The match remained tight, until 5 birdies in 7 holes from Andrew put him on the cusp of victory. Russell kept battling, eventually losing on the 33rd hole.
Congratulations to Andrew on winning his 4th County Championship.
Finally a huge thank you to all at Ponteland Golf Club, the course was presented immaculately and provided a stout challenge to all. The food and hospitality was also first class, the ongoing support to County golf is greatly appreciated.
